Bio: Deepak Bhargava joined the Center for Community Change in 1994. As the organization's first Director of Public Policy, he engaged in extensive policy analysis and advocacy on a range of poverty related issues including budget, housing, welfare, workforce development, and health issues. Deepak also developed a strong policy unit whose focus is providing research and analysis to the grassroots and bringing the voices of low-income people into policy debates at the local, state and federal levels. During this time, Deepak also directed the work of the National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support, a collaboration of 200 grassroots organizations and networks with affiliates in 40 states. Prior to joining the staff of the Center, Deepak worked in various capacities at ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. He led the organization's policy work on community reinvestment, fair housing and housing finance and was widely quoted in the media and testified before Congress on 20 occasions on these issues. He also authored several studies on redlining and discrimination by banks and insurance companies that garnered wide media attention in the early 1990's. Deepak currently serves on the boards of the Center on Law and Social Policy, the Applied Research Center, the Center for Policy Alternatives, the Poverty and Race Research and Action Center and the Discount Foundation. He has previously served on the board of the National Neighborhood Coalition.
